A would-be burglar of a Crockett County home got an unusual surprise when a 12-year-old girl foiled his efforts and pursued the intruder as he tried to flee the scene.

35-year-old Robert W. Sills tried to break into the home around 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 17 when the resident pre-teen thwarted his escape attempt, chasing after him on foot before tackling him in a nearby soybean field.

According to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a driver who witnessed the bizarre pursuit stopped to help restrain the suspect while a local farmer who saw what was happening brought zip ties to restrain Sills until the deputies arrived.

Sills is being charged with criminal trespassing and aggravated attempted burglary. CCSO states he also had an active arrest warrant against him for undisclosed charges, making the unnamed 12-year-old’s daring pursuit all the more impressive.

Social media comments on the story were a chorus of cheers for the bravery of the girl mixed with a healthy dose of mockery for the criminal apprehended by a pre-teen and a splash of parental caution for the future.

“Wild as a mink and sweet as soda pop!” Great job! And don’t do it again – that was dangerous,” read one.

Another wrote, “Farmers raise their kids different. They call their kids spunky but, more grizzly bear if you make them mad.”

Still others poked fun at the burglar’s embarrassing demise. Ha-Ha…you got tackled by a girl! Good for her. Glad the girl is okay and he was caught!” and Wonder how it’s gonna go over when he explains that in prison,” were some prime examples.

Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce said the incident, “serves as a testament to the courage and resourcefulness of our community. It’s heartening to see citizens step up to protect their neighborhood. Our deputies commend the bravery of the young girl and appreciate the assistance rendered by witnesses. I am especially glad the young lady was not hurt by this nuisance in our community.”
