On Manson’s website, she explains why she is running for a seat on the Hamilton County School Board:

To My Fellow Constituents in Hamilton County, District 11,

We are well acquainted with the reality that almost everything around us has changed drastically. As a community, we have all had to navigate two major crises: The coronavirus pandemic and the over-politicization of every institution that we hold dear. I have a strong conviction that our leaders have failed us and have propagated a spirit of division so great that many believe that we can never be unified again. This is tragic.

I believe that we can all agree that those that have been negatively impacted the most by our current state of affairs are our children. They know things are not well and the data confirms this. Our children have experienced an increase in depression and symptoms of anxiety.  They have been forced to learn at home, have had their sporting events and afterschool programs canceled, and are now seeing the great political divisions among adults be pushed down to them through curriculum. This is unacceptable. No matter what political party we are affiliated with, we should all be able to come together to make decisions that help our children, not hurt them.

This is why I have decided to run for the School Board in District 11. I am a native Chattanoogan, my children have been educated here, and my grandchildren are being educated here.  I want to work for them and for all the children in District 11 to have the opportunity to receive an excellent education. For over 15 years I have served at The Baylor School in an administrative role. I have loved working behind the scenes to serve our students, teachers, and leadership. I have been a part of making The Baylor School one of the top schools in our state and I look forward to using this experience to work with the students, teachers, and the administration to move our schools toward excellence. Our district has fallen behind academically for far too long and I am committed to serving the families of the 13 different schools in District 11 to get us back on track.  My campaign focuses on a strategy that is clearly identified as Parents Know Best

Research provides evidence for the positive effects of parent involvement on children, families, and schools when schools and parents continuously support and encourage a child’s learning and development (Eccles & Harold, 1993; Illinois State Board of Education, 1993). According to Henderson and Berla (1994), “the most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status but the extent to which that student’s family is able to:

1. Create a home environment that encourages learning;

2. Express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers;

3. Become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community.

My Parents Know Best campaign is a grassroots movement to unite our parents, teachers and school administration because when we all work together for the betterment of the next generation, we all win. There is a growing trend nationally that wants to keep parents out of the academic process, which has hurt the education of our children. I ask for your vote so that, as the District 11 representative to the Hamilton County School Board, I can help our teachers, administrators, and parents work together for the betterment of our children’s education

God Bless,

Virginia Anne Manson
