As reported by The Chattanooga Times Free Press, Hamilton County school officials have issued a statement about a male substitute teacher, dressed as a woman, who reportedly made students at East Ridge Elementary School in Hamilton County call him “Mrs.”

Hamilton County Schools spokesperson, Steve Doremus, stated that the district has received many emails and calls regarding the situation since the public became aware of the situation.

Doremus said, “HCS believes its schools should be safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for all, and we believe our schools should provide disruption-free environments that facilitate student learning. This includes an expectation that adults who interact with our students present a professional appearance that does not cause distraction.”

HCS officials reportedly spoke with Education Staffing Solutions, the agency that provides substitute teachers to the district, to reiterate their expectations for the “appearance of adults in our schools going forward.”

District officials did not respond to TFP’s questioning about policies on dress codes for teachers and background checks for teachers and substitutes which was an issue raised by many on social media.  The dress code available online for the district is only aimed at students and does not make mention of adult employees.

Education Staffing Solutions’ website states that the agency complies with Tennessee law that requires substitute teachers to have a criminal background check before being hired.

  1. Totally unacceptable! Transgenders have severe emotional issues, some of which could be caused by hormone and other drug treatments. None should be allowed in any position in public schools .

  2. So, in other words, Eastridge school district punted responsibility. Their NON answer speaks volumes.

Parents, get your kids out. Now.

  3. Let’s see, the Commander of a military unit is charged with keeping “good order and discipline”. There was a “uniform of the day” posted, dependent upon the training schedule. Now, the Principal and Vice-Principals of a School are “de-jure/de-facto” the Commanders of their various school, also responsible for keeping good order and discipline, ensuring that each student has the maximum opportunity to learn and grow their knowledge, to be safe from harm, to be treated respectfully and to enjoy social interaction with their peers, preparing them for life as productive citizens and member of society. SET THE STANDARD. Adhere to the Standard. Enforce the Standard. This is “sub-standard”. I’m not saying the individual in question is a lesser person by their choice of “gender”, but I am saying that if you are BORN a male, then dress like a male when you are in a professional position. What you do and how you do on your time is not any concern. What you do and how you do on a paid semi-professional position is under the rules of “good order and discipline”. And attempting to advance your personal desires and interests upon those you are charged with “teaching” is neither good order nor discipline. Had I been the “Commander” you would NOT HAVE entered into my domain, my area of responsibility, and I would have welcomed any sanctions that may be proffered upon me for my position. Go seek your 15 minutes of fame on YOUR TIME, not the TAXPAYERS Dime. People of the Great State of Tennessee, WE HAVE TO STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING!

  4. Is it safe to assume that all sub teachers are vetted, have a Degree in Education and a current License to teach?
    If not, why not?
Also, the schools belong to the parents and students and not to the unions, school boards nor the judges.
