A Rutherford County school board candidate was suspended from his teaching job amid allegations of inappropriate conduct.

John Duncan was teaching personal finance and history at Daniel-McKee Alternative School in Rutherford County. He has been suspended without pay since March 6, pending the outcome of the investigation, according to district spokesperson James Evans.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating claims that Duncan took inappropriate pictures of himself inside of a school.

“The specific location remains part of the investigation,” said TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland.

Prior to being hired at Daniel-McKee in August 2023, Duncan taught at Stewarts Creek High School. He also worked with Metro Nashville Public Schools before teaching for Rutherford County Schools.

Rutherford County Election Commission records also show that Duncan is also running as an independent candidate for the Zone 2 seat on the Rutherford County Board of Education.

He is set to face independent Robert Brooks and Republican Stan Vaught on August 1.

Alan Farley, administrator of elections for Rutherford County, said that “we would take a look at that time” if a candidate was found guilty of a felony.
