Two counties in Tennessee that were substantially impacted by Hurricane Helene were at the top of a recent report of unemployment rates across the state.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development released a report last week of unemployment rates in each of the state’s 95 counties.

Johnson County had the highest unemployment rate, coming in at 5.1%. While Johnson County was the only county in Tennessee to have an unemployment rate over 5%, officials say the county did have a decrease of 0.1% in March. The current unemployment rate is 1.3% higher than a year ago.

Unicoi County was not far behind at second, with an unemployment rate of 4.9%. Hurricane Helene destroyed most of the industrial park in the county, causing it to the be the only county in the state to have a rise in unemployment in March. This rate is 1.8% higher than this time last year.

Both states surpassed the seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for the state and the U.S.
