With the unexpected passing of Republican State Representative Jeff Burkhart last Friday, the Montgomery County Commission is accepting applications to fill the seat until the next election.

Burkhart’s death has greatly affected the Clarksville/Montgomery County community, with members of both political parties lamenting his loss and offering condolences to his family. Now, the County Commission is tasked with appointing an interim replacement.

In accordance with state law, the commission is seeking nominations to serve the remainder of Burkhart’s term, which expires in 2026. As the General Assembly reconvenes in mid-January, the commission is moving quickly to ensure District 75 has representation for the upcoming session.

To qualify for consideration, an individual must be at least 21 years old, a citizen of the United States, a Tennessee citizen for 3 years, and a resident within and qualified voter of the district they seek to represent for at least 1 year.

Interested candidates are being asked to submit an email to the Montgomery County Chief of Staff by Nov. 26 with a letter of interest, a current resume, and a copy of their current voter registration card.

Once the application process has closed, all qualified candidates will be given five minutes to speak at the informal county commission meeting on Dec. 1. Final nominations and the vote will be held during the regular formal commission meeting on Dec. 8.

Burkhart’s funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at Hilldale Church of Christ and is expected to be well-attended.
