A Canadian man has been arrested by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation after he traveled to Nashville earlier this month with intent to sexually abuse a child.
The 44-year-old man was charged with attempted online enticement of a minor and distributing child sexual assault material as the result of an undercover operation conducted by the FBI.
According to authorities, the man communicated with an undercover officer for over a month using a messaging app, stating his intention to engage in sexual acts with who he thought was a minor.
It was during these communications that the man distributed child sexual abuse materials.
On June 15th, the man traveled from Ottawa to Nashville in order to meet and engage in sexual acts with a child and was apprehended by agents upon arrival.
The charges as outlined in the complaint mean that the man faces, at minimum, a mandatory 10 years behind bars, and possibly up to life in jail as there is no parole in the United States federal system.
The investigation is part of a 20-year-old national initiative called Project Safe Childhood which the Department of Justice launched to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation.
U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner of the Western District of Kentucky praised the work of the FBI in the case.
“We will aggressively prosecute anyone accused of traveling to sexually abuse a minor,” said Bumgarner. “This is one of the most disturbing crimes that crosses my desk.”
