Washington County leaders are considering a program that would potentially freeze property taxes for senior homeowners.
In a meeting Monday night, County Commissioners participated in a workshop about a state program that could allow homeowners over the age of 65 who meet the income requirements to apply each year.
Those who are approved would have property taxes frozen at the amount they owe in the first year in which they qualify. The freeze would apply even if there is a property tax increase or a county-wide appraisal.
While the program is state-run, it is locally funded.
“Initially, the cost of the initiative, the program is going to be administrative,” Mayor Joe Gandy stated. “It’s going to take personnel and time, and both the assessor’s office and in the trustees’ office, just to see who qualifies.”
Once the city comes up with a plan and an estimated cost, the full commission must approve the program for it to go into effect.
