Nashville-based podcaster, conservative commentator, and OutKick founder Clay Travis has offered to personally triple the amount of an initial $5,000 reward for information about the identity of a shooter who killed a teenager after a local football game last Friday.
Cameron Frierson, 16, was shot in front of his older brother Chris late Friday night after attending the game with friends at Pearl-Cohn High School.
Police say an individual in a white sedan with tinted windows open fired as the brothers were walking home around 10:30 pm, hitting Frierson multiple times.
He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, approximately two miles away, and later died of his injuries. Detectives are still investigating the motive for the shooting but have said they do not believe it is connected to Pearl-Cohn High School.
A $5,000 reward for information about the shooter has been offered by the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, a charity founded in 2022 “in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde” which saw 19 students killed.
But Travis, who attended the game to see his own 15-year-old son’s team from Montgomery Bell Academy play against Pearl-Cohn, has offered to add another $15,000 to the reward, bringing it to a total of $20,000 to help bring the killer to justice.
“We’ve got to have way more consequences for criminal behavior. We’ve got to keep kids safe in this country, in this state, and in my city, and so I’m going to try and do whatever small amount I can to help to bring justice in this particular case,” Travis said in a video announcing his reward contribution.
Cameron Frierson was a junior at Hunter’s Lane High School, attending the Pearl-Cohn game because his school did not have a game of their own that evening. His family described him as a hard worker, holding two jobs over the summer to pay for his own back to school clothes, and an upstanding student adored by friends and teachers who planned to enroll in college after graduation.
“My son got up at 5 o’clock every morning. He said, ‘I’m going to go to college and I’m going to HVAC school… I want to own my own business… I’ll be able to take care of my family and be successful,'” his mother Brittany said.
She also said her “greatest fear in life has come true” and that she believes the shooter mistook her son for someone else as Cameron was not involved in violent or unsavory activities.
“He was not involved in the streets. He didn’t have anything to do with that type of lifestyle. He was truly being a kid. We could have lost another son — he was with our elder son, as well. He was standing right next to him when the shots went off. He took off running, and when he came back, Cameron was on the ground,” Brittany said. “It wasn’t over a girl. This wasn’t over money. This was strictly these kids looking to harm someone. And they thought someone that they were looking for were my children, and it wasn’t… You don’t have a right to take no one’s life. You don’t get that right.”
Besides his brother Chris and his parents, Cameron leaves behind four other siblings. The family has created a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral expenses.
