East Tennessee District Attorney General James Dunn has been arrested and jailed on a number of federal charges.
According to arrest records, 79-year-old Dunn, who served Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier counties, was arrested on the afternoon of August 27. He is charged with two counts of official oppression, official misconduct, retaliation for past action, coercion of a state witness, and civil rights intimidation.
Dunn was booked at 4:18 PM and was released just before 5:00 the same day.
77-year-old William Brownlow Marsh, the Deputy District Attorney General, was also arrested for official oppression and was released within the hour on the same day.
A Grand Jury presentment alleges that Dunn and Marsh conspired in 2023 to have prosecutor Erik Cooper arrested using an incomplete warrant after the Circuit Clerk refused to complete it.
Marsh is also accused of requesting a copy of the incomplete warrant, saying it was for his files, but then passing it along to a deputy.
Dunn is also alleged to have retaliated against Cooper by having him arrested after he testified as a witness before a Grand Jury back in March.
Dunn announced plans last month to retire on August 31.
