U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) has introduced two bills aimed at providing relief to farmers, truckers, and the American people who are suffering from high fuel prices.
In a speech to Congress, Burchett points out the added costs that are passed on to consumers by extreme fuel prices.
“Price gouging by greedy oil companies is causing hardworking Americans to struggle to fill their tanks. President Trump has already called on the Department of Justice just open an investigation into this abuse.” – said Burchett on the floor of the House Chamber. “Refiners are are making a hundred and seventeen dollars per barrel or two dollars and seventy-eight cents per gallon. That is nearly an eight hundred percent increase mister speaker, an eight hundred percent increase they’re making on the backs of hardworking American farmers and truck drivers.”
The legislation is designed to control exports from America. Burchett’s aim is to keep more of America’s oil at home, increasing the domestic oil supply, resulting in lower prices for consumers of diesel.
- H.R. 10423 implements an export control (ban) on diesel fuel until January 2027.
- H.R. 10422 implements an export control on diesel if the average national price hits $5 per gallon. The control would be lifted when prices drop at or below $4.50 per gallon for 30 consecutive days.
A Media Release issued on September 17, 2026, stated as follows.
“Diesel export controls drive down prices while also helping Americans keep more money in their pockets,” said Rep. Burchett. “Refiners typically make a profit of around $15 per barrel, or roughly 35 cents per gallon. Instead, refiners are choosing to sell their diesel for higher prices in Europe. Shipping American diesel overseas reduces domestic supply drives up prices at home.”
