Bills To Curb Transportation And Harboring Of Illegal Aliens In Tennessee Slated For Committee Hearings

The Tennessee Conservative [By Jason Vaughn] –

Legislation with the aim of pushing back against illegal immigration in the Volunteer State is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 13th and in the House Departments and Agencies Subcommittee on March 15th.

TRANSPORTATION OF ILLEGAL ALIENS

Senate Bill 1150 (SB1150), sponsored in the Senate by Senator Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains-District 8), aims to remove exemptions from prosecution of the offense of transporting illegal aliens for common carriers and those transporting individuals for religious purposes. – Amends TCA Title 4; Title 7; Title 9; Title 37; Title 39; Title 49; Title 50; Title 55; Title 67; Title 68 and Title 71.

The House companion bill (HB1246) is sponsored by Representative Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro-District 36).  HB1246 has yet to receive a committee assignment.

Powers and Niceley sponsored similar legislation during the last session of the General Assembly but it was killed following his testimony in the Senate Judiciary Committee with Senator Todd Gardenhire (R-Chattanooga-District 10), Senator Jon Stevens (R-Huntingdon-District 24) and then Senator Mike Bell voting against.

SB1150 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 13th.

HARBORING ILLEGAL ALIENS

House Bill 1247 (HB1247), sponsored by Representative Dennis Powers, is scheduled to be heard in the House Departments & Agencies subcommittee on March 15th.

HB1247 would make it illegal for the state to house any illegal immigrant on state owned property, except in cases of criminal conviction.

It reads, “As introduced, prohibits an illegal alien from being housed on real property owned by this state or a political subdivision of this state; excepts incarceration and other housing required as a result of a criminal conviction. – Amends TCA Title 4; Title 5; Title 6; Title 7; Title 8; Title 9; Title 12; Title 39; Title 50; Title 66; Title 68 and Title 71.” 

The Senate companion bill (SB1151) is sponsored by Senator Frank Niceley and has been assigned to the Senate State and Local Government committee but has yet to appear on their calendar upon publication of this article.

HB1247 is scheduled to be heard by the House Departments and Agencies Subcommittee on March 15th.

  1. This will clear up the tent cities on public property but will it go so far as to include private hotels paid for with taxpayer funds. Look at NYC hotels housing illegals. The rooms and food is over $300 a day per illegal. Then U add the payroll to run these flop house as well as hotel damage, police and fire responders. These once stately Times Square hotels will never be the same.

    Let Mexico, Argentina, Brazil… (117 countries) on and on pay for their own citizens. We don’t owe them anything. Take away the money the US gives out every year and spend it on our legal citizens!

    Rs spineless.
    Rs scared to lose big donor$.
    Tn must abolish
    “VOICE VOTE”.
    But legislature are scaredy cats.
