A Johnson City man who is facing charges of sexual battery by an authority figure was a former teacher with both Sullivan County Schools and Johnson City Schools.

According to News Channel 11, both school districts confirmed that 39-year-old Tyler Harmon had been previously employed by them at some point within the last ten years.

Most recently, Harmon worked for Sullivan County Schools. SCS Director of Schools Chuck Carter stated that Harmon had not been employed since his resignation on June 17, 2025.

“Law enforcement officials previously made Sullivan County Schools administration aware of reports that Tyler Harmon, a West Ridge High School teacher at the time, had possibly engaged in improper and unprofessional conduct with a student from another school system. Upon receiving such information, school administrators met Mr. Harmon at the entrance to West Ridge High School on the morning of May 22, 2025, immediately instructing Mr. Harmon to report to Central Office. Soon after arriving at Central Office, Mr. Harmon was placed on administrative leave and instructed not to enter school system property. After Director of Schools Chuck Carter soon received more information on the situation, including text messages within which Mr. Harmon admitted to an improper relationship with a student, Sullivan County Schools presented Mr. Harmon with Charges of Dismissal. Instead of facing and contesting those Charges, Mr. Harmon soon decided to resign as a Sullivan County Schools employee, with Director Carter reporting the same to the Tennessee State Board of Education.

As Tyler Harmon has not worked for Sullivan County Schools since his resignation on June 17, 2025, the school system and Director Carter would direct all further questions or inquiries on this situation to the District Attorney’s Office.”

A spokesperson with Johnson City Schools noted that Harmon was previously employed with the district, working from January 24, 2011, to September 10, 2021.

An investigation by the Johnson City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, with assistance from the Department of Children’s Services Special Investigations Unit, found that Harmon had coerced a juvenile victim into meeting privately on several occasions and engaging in sexual contact.

The incidents allegedly took place between July 1, 2024, and November 25, 2024. The victim was between the ages of 13 and 18.

Harmon is charged with two counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He is currently out of jail on a $20,000 bond.

In 2020, Harmon was named “Educator of the Week” at Science Hill High School in Johnson City.
