Gov. Lee Sets Special Election Date To Replace Deceased District 86 State Representative

Election dates to fill the opening left by the death of a Democratic State Representative Barbara Cooper have been set by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.

Cooper died on October 25 at 93 years of age. Under the order of Tennessee law, her name remained on the ballot in House District 86, for the voting period. She won, which then created a vacancy in the state. 

District 86 ecompasses part of Shelby County.

Cooper’s first year elected to the House of Representatives was in 1996. She was honored as the oldest serving lawmaker in Tennessee earlier this year. She was also among the oldest lawmakers in the United States. 

The primary election to fill the District 86 seat will be held on January 24 and the general election will occur on March 14.

According to ballotpedia, there are no official candidates yet for this election. The candidate filing deadline is December 15, 2022.
