The House Judiciary Committee is sending a bill that would create three new holidays in the state of Tennessee to honor “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” on to the full House for consideration.
House Bill 0327, sponsored by State Representative Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood-District 61), is intended to honor next year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the unalienable rights contained therein.
June would be designated “Celebration of Life” month, “because it was on June 24, 2022, that the Supreme Court of the United States decided the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization,” referring to legal case that overturned the Roe v Wade case of 1973, which enshrined abortion as a federal right.
July would become “Celebration of Liberty” month, “because it was on July 4, 1776, that America gained its independence.”
And August would be known as “Celebration of the Pursuit of Happiness” month, “because it is during August when school children across Tennessee return to school to prepare for their futures.”
State Representative Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville-District 90) questioned whether designating June as “Celebration of Life” month would be confusing because the month already has other designations. Bulso responded that it would not be an issue because several months have various designations.
When question was called, the legislation was passed through the Judiciary Committee with 16 ayes and 4 noes.
It will be sent to the House Calendar committee to be placed on the calendar for the House floor.
