An illegal immigrant is charged with attempted second-degree murder after attacking a man with a pickaxe in West Knoxville this past weekend.
26-year-old Jeinson Saded Hernandez-Moran was arrested after Knoxville police responded to a call regarding an assault that took place inside a home on the 1000 block of Morrell Road.
Officers found the victim lying in bed with a pickaxe fixed in his skull.
According to the incident report, a witness says Hernandez-Moran attacked the victim at around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, striking the victim numerous times in the head with the pickaxe.
He turned himself in to officers at the scene and was booked into the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility.
KPD stated that Hernandez-Moran and the victim knew each other prior to the attack, and it did not appear to be a random incident.
The victim was taken to UT Medical Center, where he remained with life-threatening injuries as of Monday evening.
Inmate records from the Knox County Sheriff shows that Hernandez-Moran has an immigration detainer, meaning he is being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
An ICE detainer—or “immigration hold”—is one of the key tools U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses to apprehend individuals who come in contact with local and state law enforcement agencies and put them into the federal deportation system.
An ICE detainer is a written request that a local jail or other law enforcement agency detain an individual for an additional 48 hours after his or her release date in order to provide ICE agents extra time to decide whether to take the individual into federal custody for removal purposes.
