The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
Newly released crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows Tennessee on the Top Ten list for motor vehicle theft.
More than 28 vehicle thefts were record per 100,000 residents, making Tennessee the 9th most likely state for a vehicle to be stolen.
The Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth also reports an increase in the number of juveniles involved in car theft. In 2023, there was almost a 200% rise in vehicle theft by minors.
Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp recently confirmed the increasing concern over car theft in that area, noting that law enforcement officials deal with a variety of challenges when it comes to addressing vehicle theft.
Both the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Chattanooga Police Department have responded to numerous thefts, including many with juvenile suspects.
According to Wamp, 18 juveniles were moved to be tried as adults this past year. Several of them were transferred because they faced several vehicle theft charges.
