Principal Deborah Scarlett is on a mission to make education work for the students enrolled in Jefferson County’s Virtual Academy (JCVA). The on-line program allows students to take a non-traditional approach to education in grades 5 through 12.
Not every student is suited to sitting in a row listening to classroom teachers spew out orders, assignments, and lectures. For some learners, a self-guided customized system allows them to flourish. That would be the hallmark of Jefferson County’s Virtual Academy.

The categories of non-traditional students run the full gamut in the virtual academy. It provides a way to customize instruction for the individual needs of students and serves as a critical avenue for student retention and eventually graduation.
“Offering an online learning option alongside traditional in-person schooling empowers students and families to choose the path that best fits their individual needs and goals. For many learners, the flexibility and personalization of online learning can open doors to success for families and students that may not have been achieved in a traditional school setting. We are grateful that Jefferson County recognizes the importance of offering both options for learning, ensuring that every student has access to an environment where they can truly thrive. Embracing both virtual and traditional settings, creates more opportunities for every learner to reach their fullest potential.” — said Deborah Scarlett, Principal, Jefferson County Virtual Academy

With the academy celebrating 5 years of success, the students currently enrolled in the program reflect on some of the many things that make the virtual learning experience successful. The following commentary by the students provides a window into the faith exhibited in the program administrator and in the teachers that provide instruction.

The mission of the Jefferson County Virtual Academy is “Identifying Innovative and Flexible Academic Pathways to Success”
