The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
The Knox County Commission is set to consider a proposal that would approve a grant contract between the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Safety and Homeland Security in an effort to increase “immigration enforcement services.”
If approved at the Commission’s October 27 meeting, the grant would allocate $102, 482 to the KCSO for participation in the 287(g) program, providing immigration services from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
The contract would allot $24,582 to be used for supplies, shipping costs, telephone, printing and publications, occupancy, and equipment rental/maintenance. An additional $77,900 would be used for needed purchases such as a commercial laundry system, a Karcher Cleaning system, and a Clincher IV ID System.

For the past 8 years, the 287(g) program has authorized local law enforcement agencies, including the KCSO, to check the immigration status of individuals who are arrested and to detain those who are illegal aliens.
Currently, the Roger D. Wilson Correctional Facility in Knox County is serving as the regional holding facility for illegal aliens detained in East Tennessee.
The Tennessee Department of Corrections is a partner in the “jail enforcement model” of the 287(g) program.
In August, the County Commission passed a symbolic resolution affirming their support of the county’s participation in the program.
