City of LaVergne Police Chief Burrell “Chip” Davis was fired on Monday, February 6th, proceeding his placement earlier in the day on paid administrative leave.

This is the latest development in a case that made national and international headlines when gross misconduct was discovered to have been taking place among the ranks of the officers in the City of Lavergne Police Department. After thorough investigations, the city decided that the blame belonged to the department’s chief.

It was discovered by a third party investigator, that Davis failed to report the sexual misconduct to Human Resources or his superiors, and additionally, also failed to administer any discipline to the officers under his charge, according to a press release provided by the City of La Vergne.

The department became the focus of the national spotlight earlier this year, after it was revealed that there was rampant and pervasive sexual misconduct taking place within the department both on and off police department premises.

A probe of the department was launched, and it was revealed that one female officer, Meghan Hall, was engaged in sexual affairs with multiple male collogues. City officials engaged a third-party investigator to reveal “exactly what Davis knew, and when”, in order to determine Davis’s culpability in what had developed within the department during his tenure as Chief.

The press release from the City Of Lavergne stated the third party investigators were able to come to the conclusion Chief Davis “was aware of the sexual misconduct within his department and never reported or disciplined any of the officers involved.” That same investigation also concluded that Davis worked to impede the initial investigation when the misconduct initially came to light.

The result of the probe lead to the firing of 5 officers, including Hall herself, and the suspension of 3 additional officers

The report, which was released December 28th, revealed that the sexual exploits among the officers in Davis’ department, occurred in the officer’s homes, at hotels, and at parties.

Additionally, there were also 2 occurrences of sexual misconduct while on duty, where Hall performed oral sex on two of the officers while on police department property.

Davis commented on the conduct of his officers prior to being terminated by the city, condemning their behavior, explaining that it was a “difficult situation” for the department, but that he wanted the public to know that the actions of the few are not indicative of the entire LaVergne Police Department.

Deputy Chief Brent Hatcher was named Interim chief, and the city will engage in a nationwide search for a new chief of police.
