A resolution passed by the Metro Nashville City Council on Tuesday night will allow the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) to apply for a state grant that would provide funding to place school resource officers in more Nashville schools.
According to MNPD, 80 officers are currently employed to serve as SROs. There is one at each of the district’s middle schools, and every high school has at least two on staff.

The department says there are no current openings for SROs, but also stated in August that elementary schools only have nine total officers due to staffing shortages.
The resolution passed Tuesday will allow MNPD to apply for grant money through the Statewide School Resource Officer Program.
Governor Lee approved giving money to the program three years ago, providing up to $75,000 a year for each school, in an effort to increase school safety following the Covenant School shooting in Nashville.
