Murfreesboro’s new “Better Way to Give” campaign is asking residents to consider “the most effective ways to make a positive change” instead of giving directly to panhandlers.
According to Fox 17, City residents may have noticed new signage popping up this week around the Murfreesboro downtown area urging people to “say no to panhandling.”
The signs, which have a QR code on them that sends people to a list of local charity organizations, are part of the city’s new campaign aimed at reducing acts of panhandling.
Some of the agencies listed include Operation Stand Down, Doors of Hope, The Salvation Army, The Journey Home and Murfreesboro Cold Patrol.
“Murfreesboro is a caring community. When it comes to helping those in need, consider the most effective ways to make a positive change,” Mayor Shane McFarland said in a statement. “Giving to individuals that approach asking for assistance is often counterproductive to the initiatives and efforts facilitated by the Rutherford Thrives Continuum of Care and its participating agencies.”
While panhandling is not technically illegal in the state of Tennessee, individual cities across the state have adopted their own ordinances regarding the practice, making it illegal in specific areas, and “aggressive panhandling” is a criminal offense under state law.
In Murfreesboro, it is illegal for individuals to solicit from vehicles because it can create traffic hazards and an increased risk of accidents.
“Soliciting from vehicles and impeding traffic is illegal and dangerous,” said Mayor McFarland. “Panhandling at intersections can create hazardous situations for both drivers and pedestrians, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. By supporting local nonprofit agencies instead, you help ensure the safety of everyone on the road.”
“Local charitable organizations, nonprofits and service providers can provide essential services such as food, shelter, medical care and job training, helping individuals lead more stable lives,” he continued. “By donating to these organizations, you can contribute to a comprehensive support system that makes a lasting difference.”
