While Tennessee’s Human Life Protection Act severely limits access to surgical abortions in the state, a new report shows women are instead increasingly turning to telehealth visits with out-of-state providers where abortion is legal and protected to obtain chemical abortion pills which now account for the majority of all abortions in the U.S.

The Society for Family Planning released data earlier this week showing that between January and June of 2025, approximately 750 abortions each month were obtained by Tennessee residents who relied on virtual visits and mailed-out or picked up abortion pills.

According to the #WeCount report, nearly all abortions in Tennessee and 12 other states with some level of abortion bans in the first half of 2025 have been provided through telehealth visits with providers who are covered under shield laws, which protect healthcare providers in Democrat-led states from legal action against them by authorities in states with anti-abortion laws.

“Telehealth has become a lifeline for people accessing abortion care, especially those in states with abortion bans,” said Usma Upadhyay, co-chair of the report and a professor at the University of California.

Tennessee has also theoretically outlawed telehealth for abortions and criminalized the mailing of abortion pills, but the law only applies to clinicians, not those seeking the abortions.

Rep. Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood-District 61) attempted to more thoroughly address the mailing of abortifacients during the 2025 legislative session through the Unborn Child Protection Act, but the bill never made it out of its assigned House subcommittee.

The #WeCount statistics are corroborated by a separate report released earlier this year by the Guttmacher Institute showing that while travel numbers for out-of-state clinical abortions have decreased, abortions by pill are steadily increasing in Tennessee.

Nationally, the #WeCount report found that between January and June of 2025, more than 500,000 abortions were performed, including in-clinic procedures and abortion via medication. The percentage of telehealth abortions during the same period rose 25% from the end of 2024.

Overall, abortion numbers continue to climb, with 99,000 performed each month in the U.S. in the first half of 2025, which is up from 95,000 per month in 2024, primarily due to the ease of access of abortion pills.

  1. Republicans need to not push tougher abortion laws. That amounts to turning religious views into law. What’s next – banning contraceptives? I think forcing a raped girl to have the rapists’ baby is evil. If you don’t know the difference between an “embryo” and a “fetus”, look it up. Polls show that 70% of voters don’t want extreme abortion laws – that is why we lost in 2022. I won’t vote for anyone who pushes extremist abortions laws, even Gino – I don’t share his religious view. Jesus did not condemn abortion and although the Bible was written at a time when abortion was practiced, it never directly mentions abortion. In fact, Exodus 21 says a pregnant woman’s life is more valuable than the fetus’s.

    1. The Bible is clearly pro-unborn-life, but it is not nearly as clear-cut on abortion = murder as many modern slogans claim. The texts leave genuine interpretive room. What Jesus Himself says nothing direct.
Jesus never mentions abortion, miscarriages, or anything resembling the modern debate. The closest He comes to the topic is the general command to protect the weak, vulnerable, and children (Matt 18:6, 19:14; Mark 10:14), which pro-life believers apply to the unborn and pro-choice believers apply to born children in poverty, war zones, etc.
The Bible does not contain the word “abortion” and does not directly address the modern procedure. However, Christians on both sides of the debate point to a handful of key passages to support their view. Here’s the honest, straightforward rundown of the texts that actually get cited, with what they do (and don’t) say:
Exodus 21:22–25 (the closest thing to a direct reference)
“When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out [miscarry], but there is no harm [to the woman], the one who hit her shall surely be fined… But if there is harm [to the woman], then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye…”
      Psalm 139:13–16
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb… My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret…”
      Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…”
Luke 1:41–44 (John the Baptist leaps in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, arrives)
      Exodus 21:22–25 (the counter-reading above)
The unborn child is valuable but not granted the legal status of a born person.
I don’t care what you “think”……….you are not the final word. God is…… what do you “think” he will judge you for aborting a baby? Are you willing to bet your eternity on your “thinking”?

    2. Psalm 139:13–16 and Jeremiah 1:5 emphasize the sacredness of life from conception.

Abortion is the taking of an innocent helpless life, which you’re condoning.

You’ll have to answer to God.

    3. You have a sick and perverted view of the Bible. You have claimed to be a Christian in your other post on this website. But clearly by Your own words that is not case.
      Isaiah 49:1 NKJV
      “Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
      The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
      Isaiah 49:5 NKJV
5 “And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel is gathered to Him
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
Man cannot change God’s moral laws no matter what he may think. Just like the Supreme Court said a marriage can be between a man and man or woman and woman.
      Genesis 1:27,28 KJV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
      Matthew 19:6 KJV
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
      Titus 13-15 NIV
13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
In God we trust not government or man.
      Have a blessed day.

  2. What on Earth did you expect? Trump’s three Federalist Society picks for the Supreme Court swore up and down that Roe v. Wade was “precedent,” “settled law,” blah blah blah …. and THEN, as soon as they had the opportunity, they overturned it. And NOW, even women who would personally never choose to have an abortion are just a bit miffed, seeing how women in red states are LOSING a big measure of their self-determination in ways that men have no frame of reference for. Is it any wonder that women are staying home, getting a telemedicine screening, and getting mifepristone pills by mail? Pass all the laws you want, but women will always find a way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

    1. Your same old story. Blah, blah, blah. God’s word is the final Word not yours or mine. Whether you believe in God or not. You will stand before Him just like I will have too and give account for what we did or didn’t do. And standing up for the sanctity of life is what I choose to do.
      Ecclesiastes 12:14 NKJV
14 For God will bring every work into judgment,
      Including every secret thing,
      Whether good or evil.
      Romans 14:11 NKJV
      11 For it is written:
“As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God.”
      2 Corinthians 5:10 NKJV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
      Hebrews 4:12,13 NKJV
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
In God we trust not government or man.
      Have a blessed day.
