A recently released registered sex offender has been charged with violently attacking two women in the downtown Nashville area on Thursday.

Deontez Drew, 27, is accused of attacking a 23-year-old woman on Division Street around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. He allegedly then went on to beat a 39-year-old woman on Pine Street with a baseball bat that afternoon.

Drew had just been released from the Hardeman County Correctional Facility on Wednesday after completing a 9-year-sentence.

His run-ins with the law began in 2015 when Drew was just 18 years old. At that time he was charged with the aggravated rape of a Knoxville woman. The following year, he was charged with indecent exposure and solicitation of a minor, and in 2017, he was charged with statutory rape.

Drew is now charged with aggravated rape and especially aggravated kidnapping for the attack on a woman who was walking home from work to her Division Street apartment. According to the press release, Drew attacked her under a railroad overpass and forced her to engage in sex acts.

The victim convinced Drew that he could stay with her after he told her he had just recently gotten out of jail and did not want to return. When she had the opportunity to run away, she went to her apartment lobby and called the police.

On Thursday afternoon, a woman was returning from taking her dog for a walk when she met Drew, who was pretending to be an Uber Eat delivery driver. As she neared the elevators in her Pine Street apartment complex, Drew hit her in the face and the back of the head with a wooden bat.

Nearby residents heard the commotion and rushed to her aid as Drew attempted to run away. One resident followed him, seeing Drew hide under a car near Laurel Street and 11th Avenue South. They kept watch on him until a Metro officer came and took him into custody.

Drew is charged with attempted criminal homicide and especially aggravated robbery for that attack.

The second victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Drew was booked into the Metro County Jail with an $800,000 bond.
