The director of the Rutherford County Library System (RCLS) could find herself without a job after refusing to move 132 books into a different section as instructed by the board.
The Rutherford County Library Alliance told WSMV that the books in question have been classified as children’s books but that the RCLS recently voted to have them relocated to the adult section.
The decision comes after months of discussion following Board Chair Cody York’s complaint that some of the books pushed “gender confusion” while others included LGBTQ+ characters and messages.
Luanne James, directors of the RCLS, sent a letter to board members last week, stating that she could not relocate the books without violating the First Amendment for county residents and said she is ethically bound to uphold it.
James said, “Restricting access to these materials through subjective relocation or removal constitutes a violation of the community’s right to information and a direct infringement on the principles of free speech.”
While library alliance members praised James’ refusal, stating that “James is the epitome of a true American Patriot,” York said that James’ lack of compliance is insubordination.
“The Executive Director’s refusal to implement a lawful directive of the Rutherford County Library Board constitutes insubordination,” York told WSMV. “The Board has the authority and responsibility to establish policy for the library system. When a Director refuses to carry out a duly adopted Board decision, it undermines the governance of the institution and cannot be ignored.”
A special meeting of the RCLS Board will be held on March 30 at 5 p.m. At this meeting, board members will discuss the refusal and determine what actions will be taken.
James was just hired by RCLS in July 2025 but has worked in public service for 25 years, previously in South Carolina and Texas.

Does anyone remember the County Court Clerk in Middle Tennessee who refused to honor the law REQUIRING her to recognize and sign off on GAY MARRIAGE certificate. Do you remember how the LEGACY media vilified and condemned her for ‘standing up for morals’? Do you remember how the then, so called ‘conservative leaders’ of our state, turned their back on her moral stand and ignored her cry for help, legislatively? I do. And now, no one has to wonder where some things stand on this one –
Legacy media? SILENT! Tennessee Leadership? SILENT! Rutherford County politicians? Silent! Democrats, Liberals and the
Rutherford County LIBRARY Alliance? They are standing for and defending insubordination! And at least SO FAR the, Rutherford County Library System Chairman is standing up to this insubordination….but will a majority of these board members stand up against Luanne James, Director of RCLS and her leftist lean? I doubt any politician’s will stand, but lets hope these board members see this for what it is…..an agenda! There is no explanation nor common sense reasoning, that these books, pushing an agenda should be available AT TAXPAYERS EXPENSE to all children in public school libraries! Real leaders would stand up consistently for such basic morals.
Good riddance of these evil people subjecting these perverted books to our children.
