The Tennessee Conservative Staff –
A bill that would expand existing gun legislation for private schools is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Education Committee on March 13.
Senate Bill 1708 (SB1708), sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28), reads “As introduced, clarifies that a private school serving students in any of the grades pre-K through 12 is authorized to adopt a handgun carry policy for the private school’s property.”
This would expand an already existing state law that allows K-12 private schools to make handgun carry policies for their school. The new law would change that legislation to allow PreK-12 private schools to do so.
Corresponding House Bill 1631 (HB1631), sponsored by Representative Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood-District 61), was previously passed on the House floor with a vote of 74 to 23.
