While results from the Memphis Safe Task Force have been promising, the Shelby County Republican Party wants to ensure the criminals arrested aren’t set free to roam the streets again, calling for federal oversight and accountability of the county’s extremely liberal District Attorney.
On Tuesday, the Shelby County GOP unanimously adopted a resolution urging the federal government to implement “oversight and tracking mechanisms for arrests made under the Memphis Safe Task Force” to “prevent the potential undermining of the Task Force’s successes by local prosecutorial leniency, particularly from Soros-backed Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy.”
Mulroy has been a highly controversial DA, being often criticized for his left-wing policies including participation in “restorative justice” schemes and an agreement with the Biden-era Department of Justice to not prosecute those who knowingly spread HIV.
The Democrat District Attorney has also been the subject of several ethics complaints and the focus of investigation by the General Assembly. Recently, Mulroy attended a townhall with Memphis Mayor Paul Young where he fed into the liberal narrative that the Task Force is disproportionately targeting Hispanics and legal Latino residents in the city.
After praising the efforts of Task Force, which has made over 2,000 arrests and located 93 missing children as of Wednesday, Nov. 5, the resolution addresses the “need for federal monitoring of prosecution outcomes, plea deals, sentencing, and recidivism rates to hold offenders accountable and maximize the Task Force’s long-term impact on public safety.”
“Memphis deserves a future free from fear, where families can thrive and communities flourish,” said Rachel Wall, 1st Vice Chairman of the Republican Party of Shelby County. “We’ve seen what strong law enforcement can achieve, but without federal tracking, our Soros-backed DA’s history of soft-on-crime policies could let dangerous criminals back on the streets, wasting this vital opportunity. This resolution is a call to action for transparency and real accountability.”
Tagged in the social media post of the resolution were President Donald Trump, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, Tennessee Senators Marsha Blacburn and Bill Hagerty, State Representative David Kustoff, TN Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton, and Lt. Gov. Randy McNally.
At a local level, conservative state senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis-District 31) has filed the Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act (SB1467) for consideration in the 2026 legislative session to help keep local district attorneys under a watchful eye in their prosecutions, or lack thereof, for arrests made under the task force.
If passed, the legislation will require district attorneys in any judicial district where Operation Viper or the Memphis Safe Task force operated to submit a report to the state and U.S. Attorneys General, Speakers of the TN House and Senate, and other oversight boards when the local DA, relative to felony charges, enters a plea agreement, lowers a charge, or dismisses/declines to prosecute offenses.
“While my efforts to hold our D.A. accountable have made the D.A. sound mor muscular with his social media rhetoric, I am not yet convinced he isn’t undermining public safety with large amounts of dismissals, downgrading of charges, and his Justice Review Unit that seeks to reduce charges for previous convictions. This will allow us to track what D.A. Mulroy is doing with the state charges. In other words, we can’t let this once in a generation opportunity go to waste,” Brent previously said of his bill.
