The Tennessee Conservative [By Paula Gomes] –
Stolen property of Homeland Security was recovered after a sheriff’s deputy pulled a car over on the interstate for speeding last week.
Last Thursday, Deputy Kessler of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) pulled a vehicle over on I-40 West near mile marker 227 after he observed the Lincoln sedan traveling 93 miles per hour in a 70mph zone. The driver was also following a Ford SUV too closely.
During the traffic stop, Deputy Kessler deployed his K-9 partner named Havoc who then alerted him to the rear of the vehicle, including the driver’s side rear door.
Following a search of the sedan, a backpack was found in the trunk with a luggage tag with an ominously labeled “Homeland Security Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations Support Directorate.”
The bag contained various items belonging to Homeland Security that were later determined to have been stolen from a Metro Nashville division of the Department of Homeland Security.
WCSO Captain Scott Moore did not provide any further details about the sensitive items found in the backpack but stated that while they were not “inherently dangerous to the public in a physical sense” that they were back in “appropriate hands.”
Moore said that the unauthorized possession of the items “was concerning due to their sensitive nature and the potential misuse of the materials or associated identifiers.”
Neither the identity of the driver nor specific charges have been released to the public.
The Homeland Security Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations Support Directorate (CWMD OSD) is part of the Department of Homeland Security and was established at the end of 2017 when the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, a majority of the Office of Health Affairs, and other Department of Homeland Security elements were consolidated.
Created to counter attempts by terrorists and other bad actors seeking to use weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the CWMD OSD coordinates with federal, state, local, and other entities to develop and implement programs to detect such threats. By providing training and exercise services, CWMD OSD enhances the nation’s ability to both prevent and respond to WMD threats.
