The Tennessee Conservative [By Rebecca Scott] –

A bill that would provide lifetime protection for victims of stalking and harassment was passed unanimously on the Tennessee House floor on Thursday this week.

The General Assembly Website records the floor votes on HB1645 as amended on third consideration as 96 Ayes and 0 Noes.

House Bill 1645 (HB1645) is sponsored by William Lamberth (R-Portland-District 44) and, in regard to orders of protection, “As introduced, expands the eligibility for filing a petition to obtain a lifetime order of protection to include victims of aggravated stalking, especially aggravated stalking, and felony harassment. – Amends TCA Title 36 and Title 39.”

Previously, an amendment had been filed by Representative Chris Todd (R-Madison County-District 73) to expedite implementation of the legislation if passed.

Representative Lamberth has explained that this bill would allow for lifetime orders of protection to be available to victims of stalking and harassment rather than requiring them to renew the order annually with the court.

According to a report from the Tennessee General Assembly Fiscal Review Committee, this amendment would have no significant fiscal impact on the State of Tennessee either positively or negatively. This means the legislation will not likely be held up due to budgetary considerations.

With the passage of HB1645, it is now ready for transmission to the Tennessee Senate where it is being carried by Senator Paul Rose (R-Lauderdale, Shelby & Tipton Counties – District 32) as Senate Bill 1699 (SB1699).

The Tennessee Conservative will continue to follow this bill as it continues its legislative journey.
