While much attention has been centered on the upcoming special election for Tennessee’s Congressional District 7 with Congressman Mark Green announcing his retirement, another seat is now drawing candidates in the 6th Congressional District as current U.S. Rep. John Rose is on the 2026 gubernatorial campaign trail.

Tennessee House Majority Whip Johnny Garrett (R-Goodlettsville-District 45) officially announced his candidacy on Tuesday, July 8, billing himself as a, pro-Trump Christian conservative, husband and father of three, [who] is running for Congress to fight alongside President Trump in doing what the swamp in Washington would never do – stand up for conservative family values, fix our economy, and keep our country safe.”

Per his announcement video, some of Garrett’s priorities will include deporting all illegal immigrants, cutting taxes, and preventing China from purchasing U.S. land.

Under the issues page on his website, he lists keeping boys out of girls sports, supporting farmers and ranchers, defending second amendment rights, standing with Israel, and protecting the sanctity of life as further points of importance.

In an interview with The Daily Wire, Garrett also expressed a desire to pass a national ban on “gender affirming care” modeled after Tennessee’s own law as his first bill should he be elected, an idea currently being floated by Rep. Andy Ogles but that has yet to take a definitive shape.

“If indeed the good people of the 6th District want me to be their congressman, I want that to be the first bill that I file, to make sure that’s a nationwide ban that you cannot mutilate children. We have to protect our children, and that should be a priority. There should be a federal law filed tomorrow to make that a nationwide law, just like Tennessee,” Garrett said.

According to Tennessee Stand’s Legislative Report Card, Garrett has an 80 lifetime score for a his voting record and a “C” for leadership score, which measures the willingness of state legislators to defend liberty by, speaking up in committee hearings or on the chamber floor, sponsoring or co-sponsoring key pieces of legislation, and demonstrably working to preserve liberty on behalf of citizens.” He also receives slightly over 58% of his campaign funds from special interest groups according to the report.

Garrett, who has served in the Tennessee House since 2018, is already drawing support from fellow state legislators, including Rep. Aron Maberry (R-Clarksville-District 68) who reposted Garrett’s campaign video and wrote, So happy to hear this. You will truly be great for the 6th Congressional District!”

Per a press release, the new Congressional candidate is supportive of President Trump’s America First agenda, aiming to fight “against the Left’s woke insanity that has hurt Tennesseans,” particularly in the arenas of the weaponization of justice and policies regarding safety and the economy. “In critical times like these, it’s vitally important that Tennessee has leaders in Washington who work tirelessly to further the conservative values of the people. I am ready to be that leader and ensure Tennesseans prosper in Donald Trump’s new Golden Age of America.”

  1. He’s no Van Hilleary, so why even think of an “80/C” Johnny Garrett when voters in the 6th will be able to vote for Van who I believe had Heritage scores over 90 when he served in Congress. Tepid conservative vs. proven solid conservative. VOTE VAN HILLEARY!
