Senator London Lamar (D-Memphis-District 33) and Representative Joe Towns Jr. (D-Memphis-District 84) have introduced legislation to oust Columbus Day and replace it with “Super Bowl Monday” in the state of Tennessee.

At the time of this article’s publication, both House Bill 1463 and its corresponding Senate Bill 1344 have been introduced in their respective wings of the legislature and are now awaiting further consideration.

While the democrats have presented this post “Super Bowl Sunday” celebration as a way to say in with the “good” and out with the “bad,” for those who have kept up with the continuous developments within “cancel culture” this comes as no surprise.

However, since Columbus Day is still officially a national holiday, the most that this state level legislation can do is put into writing that Tennessee rejects the holiday’s relevance and existence.

According to the bill’s summary this legislation would replace the language in Tennessee Code that says “the second Monday in October, known as ‘Columbus Day’” with language that says “the first Monday after the Super Bowl, known as ‘Super Bowl Monday.’”

It would take effect immediately upon becoming law. So, if this bill gets passed, there would theoretically be no more Columbus Day, going forward.

Columbus Day was originally deemed a national holiday in 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt when he chose October 12th as the day to honor the explorer who many believe helped to “discover the New World.”

Ultimately, this bill would remove Columbus Day as a legal holiday within the state of Tennessee, despite the fact that it isn’t actually an official Tennessee state holiday and state offices don’t even close on or near Columbus Day.

Regardless of feelings surrounding Columbus Day itself, some might think “Super Bowl Monday” is a good idea considering how important the sports event is to many folks across the nation. However, whether that justifies turning it into an official state holiday that would replace Columbus Day, is an entirely different question.

Deliberations on this bill likely won’t last very long considering how light the subject matter is in comparison to many of the hot-topic issues that legislators will be paying most of their attention to throughout this legislative session.

  1. Leave it to Memphis the most challenged city racially in TN or perhaps nationally, to present this ridiculous idea of Super Bowl holiday. Guess it could be called “Overhung Recovery Day”. Lot of TN legislators appear to have limp spines on woke stupidity .

  2. I’m not a football fan so how about having a “I don’t give a hoot Monday” If we did away with half the holidays the upper crust enjoys, may they could do something meaningful, like truly represent the people who elected them. In all my years of working, very few holidays were treated as paid days off. Most had to be worked. Union members and politicos get more paid holidays than a dog has fleas.

  3. I hate Woke Professional Sports in the first place but I’d change the name to something like ” Robert E Lee Day ” or something like that to honor our Southern Heroes and to be anti-communist .

When the Commies start their crap ALWAYS hit back harder than they !!!

NEVER EVER Compromise or concede with Wokeism /Communism in ANY way . Go on the offensive and never back down . You see where going along to get along has gotten us and it’s time to draw the line and counter attack !!!
