The University of Tennessee is one of seven universities across the country who is being asked to stop working with a Chinese scholarship program.

Republican members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party have urged UT to end its partnership with the “nefarious mechanism” that is the Chinese Scholarship Council. Committee members have noted the danger in the lack of research security with this and similar programs allowing foreign students to work on federally funded government projects.

The program, which is described as a study abroad program that is funded by China, “purports to be a joint scholarship program between U.S. and Chinese institutions; however, in reality it is a CCP-managed technology transfer effort that exploits U.S. institutions and directly supports China’s military and scientific growth,” according to U.S. Representative John Moolenar, who chairs the committee.

The request was made to the University of Tennessee, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Temple University, and campuses of the University of California at Davis, Irvine, and Riverside. The committee requested records from the schools related to the program in an effort to investigate the “infiltration” happening in American universities. Dartmouth and Notre Dame both reported that they had already initiated their break with the program.

University of Tennessee officials told the Associated Press that they are looking into the requests made by the letter.
