A member of the Wilson County School Board has resigned following a second arrest on more charges of sexual indecent exposure.

51-year-old Donnell “Donnie” Self was originally charged with two counts of sexual indecent exposure last Tuesday after turning himself into the Lebanon Police Department (LPD).

He was released later that day on a $1,500 bond, and LPD stated they would release no additional details at the time to “uphold the integrity of our ongoing investigation.”

Then on Friday, Dec. 19, LPD reported that Self surrendered himself again on new charges, including three counts of indecent exposure and one count of criminal attempt. The department said that since Self’s earlier arrest, “multiple allegations have been reported” involving Self in a “similar manner to the original report.”

According to the arrest affidavit, an employee of a BJ Hot Chicken told police that Self exposed himself to her after using the restroom in the restaurant on Dec. 15. Self allegedly returned to the counter with his genitals exposed through the zipper of his pants as he placed his order. Another employee reported that they witnessed the exposure and said they believed it was intentional because it was the second time it had occurred, the first time being in September of this year.

Wilson County Jail records show Self was booked on the new charges on Dec. 19 but was released on a $4,000 bail the same day. The investigation is continuing and police “expect more charges could be filed as we further our investigation.”

Self announced his resignation from the Wilson County School Board following the second round of charges, and his attorney issued the following statement:

“Mr. Self has spent 30 years in public service. It became clear to today that resigning from the School Board was the appropriate thing to do. He needs to devote all of his energy to his family and addressing personal issues that have led to today’s resignation. He has received a lot of support from those who know him, and what he has done for the community before these events and wishes to thank those who have done so. Mr. Self is determined that his future will be brighter and better from change that must occur as a result of his arrest and is determined to turn it to a positive change in his life.  As his attorney and for many others in the public eye, I am convinced that if most people’s very worst moments were on video, they would be much less judgmental toward others.”

Self was elected to the school board in 2024 as the Zone 5 representative and was a LPD officer from 1996 to 2015, according to the department.

Wilson County Schools released this statement regarding the second arrest:

“While will not make any comments on the specific charges or ongoing legal matters involving Mr. Self, we are very concerned and saddened with all that’s transpired throughout this week from information provided by law enforcement. Mr. Self is locally elected official who represents Zone 5 on the Board of Education and is not a direct employee of WCS.”
