3 Pro-Life Bills To Be Heard By TN General Assembly Committees

Subcommittees and Committees in the Tennessee Legislature will hear three pro-life bills this week, beginning Tuesday, March 15th.

If you support the passage of any or all of these bills, contact the associated subcommittee and committee members and your legislators prior to their meetings.

#1 Tennessee Abortion-Inducing Drug Risk Protocol Act – a.k.a. the Tele-Med Abortion Ban

House Bill 2416 (HB2416) sponsored by Representative Debra Moody (R-Covington) and Senate Bill 2281 (SB2281), sponsored by Senator Mike Bell (R-Riceville) comes in response to the FDA recently announcing they are openly encouraging tele-med and mail-order abortion prescriptions.

The amended legislation now reads “Enacts the Tennessee Abortion Inducing Drug Risk Protocol Act. States that an abortion-inducing drug may be provided only by a qualified physician and sets the procedures that must be taken by that physician prior to and following providing an abortion-inducing drug.  Bans abortion-inducing drugs from being provided on elementary, secondary, or postsecondary school grounds.  Creates a Class E felony for anyone who intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly violates this act. States that failure to comply with this act provides a basis for a civil malpractice action against a healthcare provider.”

SB2281 was recommended for passage with amendments by the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 7-2 vote with only the Democrats voting against.

#2 Local Government Abortion Funding Ban

House Bill 2466 (HB2466), sponsored by Representative Tom Leatherwood (R-Arlington) and Senate Bill 2444 (SB2444), sponsored by Senator Mike Bell (R-Riceville), prohibits local government from providing monetary assistance to an elective abortion provider.

House Bill 2466 has been placed on the Local Government Committee for March 15th, 2022.

Senate Bill 2444 has been placed on the State and Local Government Committee calendar for the same day.

#3 Abortion Influence Education Bill

House Bill 2557 (HB2557), sponsored by Representative Debra Moody (R-Covington), and Senate Bill 2158 (SB2158) sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) , as introduced, prohibits a Local Education Agency (LEA) or public charter school from knowingly entering into an agreement with an individual or entity that performs abortions, induces abortions, provides abortion referrals, or provides funding, advocacy, or other support for abortions.

HB2557 passed the House of Representatives with 70 Ayes, 21 Nays & with 1 person not voting.

Only the Democrats voted Nay on the bill.

The Senate version (SB2158) has been placed on the calendar for the Senate Education Committee for March 16th, 2022. Republican Senators serving on the Education Committee  are listed below.
