The Shelby County Election Commission announced during a specially called meeting on Tuesday that they would not be including a ballot referendum that would include several questions related to gun laws.
According to Commissioner Mark Luttrell, the State Coordinator of Election gave instructions to the Commission to not allow the referendums to be placed on the ballot.
Luttrell said that commissioners were unable to answer any questions on the matter, as they were expecting that legal actions would follow the announcement.
After the meeting, Administrator of Elections Linda Phillips released the following statement:
“The City of Memphis has requested that a charter amendment referendum ordinance be placed on the ballot. However, the State Coordinator of Elections has advised us, through a letter, that this ordinance may be preempted by state law. The State Coordinator of Elections guides us in administering elections, and we will follow his direction. If the City of Memphis decides to challenge this interpretation, we will respect the final decision made by the courts.”
While the meeting initially began as a special called session, it was moved into an executive session following a recess.
Several members of the public asked commissioners to proceed with the referendums. Included in those speaking out were Alex Hensley, who worked for Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris’s campaign, State Representative Justin Pearson, and Amber Sherman from the group Black Voters Matter.
Hensley and Sherman both argued that it was illegal for the state to threaten to withhold sales tax revenue from the city.
“To be clearer, they are pushing unconstitutional measures because they think they know better about what our community needs than we do. They are insinuating voters are ignorant. And this is not only insulting, it is wrong,” Hensley said. “Frankly, they are making stuff up to push a political agenda at the expense of our democracy. We cannot trust what is coming from this legislature’s leadership.”

I’ve posted this before, but it is worth repeating.
The Dems who run Memphis are soooo stupid. Until they get Common Sense, they’re hopeless. They need to be ridiculed.
Some Facts about Memphis (all these are true) >
– Memphis is the Most Dangerous City in the U.S. On one list they’re # 1 and on another # 2.
– Last time I checked, they were an unofficial “Sanctuary City” because the Sheriff wouldn’t cooperate with ICE.
– Taking guns away from law-abiding people will make it more dangerous. Then only the criminals will have guns.
– Memphis’ nickname is “Memphganistan” and there’s a song by that name.
– Memphis is so dangerous that even MoneyBagg Yo (a famous rapper from Memphis) moved to Atlanta in 2022 to escape the violence in Memphis after his friend Big Nuskie was murdered. He has a family and kids and didn’t feel safe in Memphis.
– In 2018 the CEO of the Memphis Chamber was shot in the back of the head. A random robbery. Guys in a stolen car. They killed him first and then robbed him. Yep – back of the head. He had moved Downtown to prove that Memphis was safe. Google it if you doubt it.
– Electric and cable linemen can’t even go up a telephone pole without an armed guard on the ground because a criminal will stop, pull out a gun and say “Throw down your wallet”. Criminals drive around Memphis in stolen cars looking for opportunities.
Seriously – do NOT go there unless you must and if you go, carry a gun and be VERY alert – they will sneak up behind you.
