While Tennesseans reportedly have increasing concerns about safety, a recently released report shows that the number of residents who have been victimized by crime has actually decreased over the last year.

A report from Safewise lists the safest cities in Tennessee. FBI crime data is used to determine crime rates based on property crimes and violent crimes. Households were also surveyed to determine what safety concerns were most pressing to residents.

The data showed the following as the 20 safest cities in the state:

  1. Nolensville
  2. Signal Mountain
  3. Kingston
  4. Mount Juliet
  5. Oakland
  6. Atoka
  7. Loudon
  8. Church Hill
  9. Fairview
  10. Spring Hill
  11. Brentwood
  12. Hendersonville
  13. Millersville
  14. Jonesborough
  15. Portland
  16. Maryville
  17. Franklin
  18. Gallatin
  19. Greenbrier
  20. LaFollette

A few key takeaways from the report:

  • FBI data showed no reports of violent crimes in Signal Mountain.
  • Nolensville, Millersville, Greenbrier, and LaFollette all showed a decrease in the rate of both violent crimes and property crime.
  • Portland was the only city in the state to show a decrease in both types of crime for two years in a row.
  • The property crime rate in Jonesborough decreased by 36% over the previous year.

While a higher percentage of respondents said they are concerned about violent crime, only 10% stated that they had experienced a violent crime. This is down from 17% in the previous year.

More people said they were concerned with gun violence than in previous years, but the percentage of those who experienced gun violence dropped by 50% from the previous year.

FBI data shows that there were 18 mass shootings in Tennessee in 2024, down from 21 in 2023.

  1. Keep in mind FBI crime data is not mandatory reporting by cities/municipalities and well documented as inaccurate.
