The father of renowned athlete and women’s advocate Riley Gaines is jumping into the race to fill Congressman John Rose’s seat as the competition to replace the gubernatorial candidate intensifies.

Brad Gaines, a former Vanderbilt football player, filed the paperwork officially declaring his candidacy on August 25, per Federal Election Commission records. He joins a growing field of candidates currently consisting of four other Republicans, two Democrats, and one unaffiliated individual.

Amongst the declared Republican candidates against whom Gaines will run is State Representative Johnny Garrett (R-Goodlettsville-District 45), who made his announcement in July. The other Republicans include U.S Army veteran Dale Braden, former Tennessee congressman Van Hilleary, and Knoxville businessman Joe Reid.

On the Democrat side is Navy veteran Mike Croley and Lore Bergman, a social activist and the sole female candidate thus far. The unaffiliated candidate, Christopher Monday, ran for this same seat in 2020 as an independent.

The 6th Congressional District generally encompasses a chunk of north-central Tennessee and spans along the state’s border with Kentucky and either partially or wholly covers 19 counties.

At this juncture, Gaines has only a single-page website which does not yet list any platforms or information and does not have any official social media platforms.

  1. The obvious choice for conservatives in the 6th District is Van Hilleary. During his previous time in the House Van compiled a solid conservative record so he a known quantity who can be expected to be a solid conservative once again. The only other officeholder with a known record is Johnny Garrett who only earns a tepid conservative 73/C from the TN Legislative Report Card. The rest are unknown quantities. Voters should stick with solid conservative Van Hilleary.
