A Cleveland man says it was “God’s hand” that placed him in the right place at the right time to help save a family from a carjacking and kidnapping attempt over the weekend.
Greg Bingham was on his way to dinner with Eddie Williams on Saturday night when they missed their turn and found themselves in downtown Chattanooga.
Williams says a woman suddenly appeared in front of the car, “screaming at the top of her lungs in just terror and panic.”
He stopped the car and Bingham, a retired police officer of 29 years, jumped out. The woman told them that she was loading her children into her car at the Creative Discovery Museum when a man jumped into her car and tried to leave with her two young children and her father-in-law inside the vehicle.
Bingham says he pulled his gun on the suspect and told him to get on the ground.
“I basically tell him, in so many words, that if he moves, it’s going to be really bad for him,” Bingham said.
Another witness saw what was happening and brought zip ties from his car to detain the man until Chattanooga police arrived on the scene.
The family was safe and Bingham says he was able to speak to the mother after the man was arrested. He believes his being in the area was not a coincidence.
“God’s hand was on it. He had the right people there at the right time, and nobody got hurt, including the suspect,” he says tearfully. “I’m humbled–very humbled–that God would use me…He was in it. He enabled me to react so fast and do what I did,” he said.
Chattanooga police have identified the man as 27-year-old Aaron Fontaine of Norcross, Georgia. Police say Fontaine is homeless. He has been charged with attempted carjacking, kidnapping, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, and disorderly conduct.
Police reports say that Fontaine stated that “he was tired of living on the streets, and he saw the door open and just went for it.”
He is scheduled to appear in court on September 23.
