After launching on Monday, the Memphis Safe Task Force reportedly made nine arrests during its first day as numerous law enforcement agencies began settling into the community.

During an operational briefing Monday afternoon, hundreds of law enforcement officers could be seen from multiple state and federal agencies including Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agents (TBI), Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the Department of Homeland Security, and White House representatives.

And according to an X post from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, members of the task force arrested nine individuals and took two illegal firearms off the street on Monday, the first official day of the operation. Suspect names and their alleged crimes have not yet been released.

She also stated that 219 officers have been special deputized and confirmed that as of Tuesday morning the Joint Operations Center is up and running.

The task force’s command center is located next to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office training academy, and the U.S. Marshals Services, TBI, and Air and Marine operations also have mobile command centers at the location.

On Friday, Gov. Lee announced the task force will ultimately be comprised of 13 agencies including the National Guard, several hundred state troopers, and FBI agents, though he has not specified the exact numbers from each agency.

The state will also allocate $100 million in grants, and the task force will be chaired by the Marshal’s Service and integrated in phases over the next weeks and months. Lee reiterated that the National Guard is intended to serve as a “critical support” role which will remain unarmed and without arrest powers unless requested by the city.

Democrats are still protesting the presence of the Guard, especially Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris who is now claiming Gov. Lee is violating the state constitution with the deployment. “The Constitution requires and action by the State Assembly before the National Guard can be deployed. It requires a rebellion, and so none of those things have taken place. And so we’re trying to figure out how, legally, any of it is happening,” Harris alleged.

He reportedly stated he will “gladly work” with the ATF, DEA, and THP, “but the National Guard’s just against the Tennessee Constitution.”

Other local Democrats are also pushing for legal intervention to prevent the Guard from coming, but thus far to no avail.

AG Bondi and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth are slated to travel to Memphis on Wednesday to meet with federal, state, and local law enforcement and National Guard troops.
