Between January and September of this year, 356 illegal immigrants have been arrested in Hamilton County.

According to data obtained by the Chattanooga Times Free Press, 42% of these arrests involving an individual with an “unknown or unauthorized citizenship status” were made by the Chattanooga Police Department (CPD).

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) was responsible for 28% of these arrests, and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) was responsible for 12%.

Hamilton County Illegal Immigrant Arrests by Agency January-September:

  • Chattanooga Police Department – 149
  • Tennessee Highway Patrol – 99
  • Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office – 43
  • East Ridge Police Department – 35
  • Red Bank Police Department – 19
  • Collegedale Police Department – 7
  • United States Marshal Services – 3
  • No Agency Listed – 1

The Chattanooga Police do not have the authority to enforce federal laws and does not charge arrestees with immigration-related offenses according to CPD spokesperson Elisa Myzal.

Instead, HCSO is responsible for notifying U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of an arrestee’s unknown immigration status so that it can be verified.

HCSO has been participating in the ICE 287(g) enforcement program since March 17th of this year via the jail enforcement model (JEM).

Under JEM, jail and prison workers can identify and process individuals with criminal or pending criminal charges who have been arrested by state or local law enforcement agencies and lack U.S. citizenship.

  1. 356? That’s all? I see thousands every time I am in Hamilton County. Profiling could lift those numbers and get the job done sooner. There are millions of illegals in our country and until they are gone, we will continue to see our tax dollars wasted on housing, medical, food, schools, illegal trucking, and more. Step it up, chipmunks.
