Raises for Tennessee teachers are on track for 2026.
A 2023 law, the Teacher Paycheck Protection Act, has been raising the minimum teacher salary in increments. In 2019 it was $35,000. That number increased to $44,500 in 2023 and went up again this year to $47,000. By next year, it will increase to $50,000, a 42 percent increase from the first year that Governor Bill Lee was in office.
The national average minimum teacher salary is $46,500.

The Tennessee Department of Education’s budget presentation released last week shows that continued investment will allow for the additional increase in 2026.
When the Tennessee General Assembly passed the law in 2023, they also removed the option for teachers to have automatic payroll deductions for professional employee organization dues.
Following Lee’s signing of the bill into law, the Tennessee Education Association (TEA) sued the state saying it was “mean-spirited” and unconstitutional.
A court ruling two months later sided with the state in allowing the elimination of the option for public school employees to have membership dues deducted from their paychecks.
