The Tennessee Conservative [By Olivia Lupia] –
Legislation which would expand fee waivers for enhanced handgun carry permits for retired law enforcement officers who meet certain criteria unanimously passed the House Civil Justice Subcommittee on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

HB1508 by Rep. Todd Warner would “extend the fee waiver for a lifetime enhanced handgun carry permit to include a retired law enforcement officer who served for less than 10 years prior to retirement, was POST-certified, or had equivalent training, on the date the officer retired, and retired from service due to an injury received in the line of duty as a law enforcement officer.”
During the committee meeting on Wednesday, Rep. Warner explained that current code waives the $300 fee every 8 years for an officer injured in the line of duty who had served for 10 or more years.
His bill would extend that benefit to any officer that’s been injured in the line of duty and must retire, regardless of the number of years of service they had.

There were no questions or comments on the bill, and the vote was 7-0 in favor of passage, including the subcommittee’s lone Democrat Gloria Johnson.

HB1508 will now proceed to the full House Judiciary Committee for consideration.

The Senate companion, SB1628, carried by Sen. Joey Hensley has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee but still does not have a calendar date.
