The Senate Health and Welfare Committee passed a bill that prohibits TennCare from providing reimbursement for Trans “gender affirming” procedures, not just for minors but for all Tennesseans covered under the state’s Medicaid program.

Senate Bill 2118 (SB2118), sponsored by State Senator Adam Lowe (R-Calhoun-D1), is intended to prevent TennCare from covering certain procedures, including puberty blockers, of the purpose of the treatment is to allow a person “to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the individual’s sex” or if the procedure treats “purported discomfort or distress from a discordance between the individual’s sex and asserted identity.”

Treatment for congenital defects, precocious puberty, disease, or physical injury would continue to be exempt.

The only committee member voting against the legislation was State Senator Jeff Yarbro (D-Nashville-D21).

The companion House Bill 2498 (HB2498), sponsored by State Representative Kip Capley (R-Summertown-D71), already passed on the House Floor on March 16.

SB2118 has been referred to the Senate Calendar Committee for scheduling.
