Following multiple reports of sexual assault and possible drugging incidents at on-campus fraternity houses over the weekend the University of Tennessee Knoxville issued a campus safety warning on Monday, offering students safety tips and providing resources to either report a crime or receive mental and emotional health support.
The school received reports of four separate incidents “originating at on-campus fraternity houses” occurring over the weekend of August 28-30, with three of those incidents including a reported sexual assault and two including suspected drugging.
University officials noted that not all the incidents had been reported to law enforcement, but the school elected to provide the information “based on reports it has received at this time” to students “because these matters may involve ongoing investigations.”
“Every sexual assault incident is different for each individual, and the university supports and respects the decisions made by the students involved on how they wish to proceed,” the email reads. The statement also emphasized that “sexual misconduct is never the fault of the victim.”
Officials are urging students who have experienced sexual assault to utilize the provided list of campus and community resources, including calling 911 in an emergency or downloading the “Safe at UT” app to speak directly to campus police.
Students are also encouraged to make use of the Student Counseling Center and practice being an “active bystander” through the school’s “Vols ACT” initiative.
The email also offered several “Going Out” safety tips like using a buddy system at social events and not leaving friends behind, sharing plans for outings with someone the student trusts, practicing “responsible drinking”, keeping tabs on drinks at all times, and utilizing the school’s amnesty policy for impaired students.
No further details were shared about the specific incidents at the frat houses over the weekend and the school did not share at which houses the events were reported.
