According to our sources, Senator Page Walley (R-Savannah) is the swing vote on the one bill that is the best chance we have to close Tennessee Primary Elections during this session of the Tennessee General Assembly.
The bill in question is House Bill 0886 / Senate Bill 0777, sponsored by Rep. Chris Todd and Sen. Adam Lowe respectively.
Through an amendment, House Bill 0886 / Senate Bill 0777 would require party registration and individuals would have to provide 90 days’ notice in writing to change one’s party affiliation after their initial registration. It also states that the party with whom the individual registers must match the party for which the individual requests a primary ballot.
House Bill sponsor, Rep. Chris Todd, told The Tennessee Conservative that they are working to get enough votes for the bill in the Senate State and Local Government Committee to put the bill back on notice so it can move forward.
Senator Walley is Vice-Chair of the Senate State and Local Government Committee and, according to our sources, he represents the vote that will mean the bill moving forward or remaining stuck in limbo.
