The Tennessee House Cities and Counties Subcommittee is scheduled to hear a bill which would prohibit local governments from expending taxpayer money for the purposes of assisting a person in obtaining an abortion.

House Bill 0090 (HB0090) is sponsored by Representative Debra Moody (R-Covington-District 81). It has been placed on the calendar for the Cities and Counties Subcommittee to consider on March 8th.

After being passed in 2019, state law already makes all abortions illegal within Tennessee. Giving assistance to a person who is attempting to get an abortion, however, is not currently illegal.

Legislators continue to battle through a number of bills that would potentially amend the state’s total abortion ban, though not all lawmakers are on board. Several moved into action after Metro Nashville proposed a $500,000 grant in 2022 to help provide funding for women to go outside of the state for an abortion.

The bill’s summary states, “as introduced, prohibits local governments from expending funds for the purposes of assisting a person in obtaining an abortion. – Amends TCA Title 5; Title 6; Title 7 and Title 8.”

The Senate Companion Bill 0060 (SB0060) is sponsored by State Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28). The bill has been recommended for passage with amendments as of February 28 and has been referred to the Senate Calendar Committee for a final vote on the Senate floor.
