The Tennessee Conservative [By Jason Vaughn] –
A bill with the goal of pushing back against the harboring of illegal aliens on state-owned property in Tennessee passed out of a House subcommittee yesterday.
House Bill 1247 (HB1247), sponsored by Representative Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro-District 36), was heard in the House Departments & Agencies subcommittee on March 15th.
During the meeting, Rep. Powers gave an explanation of the bill to the subcommittee members.
“The bill creates a law which states that illegal aliens cannot be housed on real property owned by the state or political subdivision of the state. The state may withhold state funds from any entity that is in violation,” Powers said.
Following, Powers described the amendment which makes certain exemptions to the bill.
“The amendment will exempt illegal aliens from being housed on government property if it’s in a hospital, a correctional institution, in custody or guardianship of Children’s Services or a special school operated by the Department of Education,” Powers said.
A vote was taken and the amendment passed with voice vote, ayes prevailing.
The bill then passed as amended by voice vote, ayes prevailing. More than one No vote was heard but only Representative Bill Beck (D-Nashville-District 51) requested to be recorded as voting No.
Following the vote, Chairman John Holsclaw (R-Elizabethton-District 4) gave the legislation the go-ahead to progress to the State Government Committee and is scheduled to be heard on March 22nd.
The Senate version of the bill (SB1151), sponsored by Senator Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains-District 8), is scheduled to be heard in the Senate State and Local Government Committee on March 21st.
