The murder case against 21-year-old Juan Carlos Diaz Perez was pushed on to the Knox County Grand Jury Wednesday morning.

Perez is charged with killing his former girlfriend, 18-year-old Suceli Perez in July, who was also the mother of a toddler.

Autopsy reports stated that her death was ruled to be a homicide and detailed that she suffered from “extensive chopping injuries” to her head, face, and neck and had also been strangled.

Detectives with the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) were called to a home on Mercer Street after a report was made of an assault taking place there. When they arrived, they did not find a body.

Suceli’s body was later found in the bed of a white pickup by KPD and officers from the Oak Ridge Police Department. The truck was located at a park near Sweet Gum Lane.

A machete, which was believed to be the murder weapon, was found under the victim’s body in the truck bed. The injuries detailed in the autopsy are consistent with the machete, with the victim having at least 50 separate head injuries and two dozen cuts on the neck.

KPD Detective Thomas Turner testified to also seeing what he believed to be “pieces of flesh in the driveway.”

This sparked a brief manhunt involving the Roane County Sheriff’s Office, Blount County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshal Service. Diaz Perez was eventually located and taken into custody in Oak Ridge.

During the Wednesday court appearance, the case was moved to the grand jury, and bond was set at $250,000.

Records also indicate that Perez has an immigrant detainer hold. This likely means that Diaz Perez was in the country illegally.
