A Chattanooga organization is providing a therapeutic outlet for local veterans through the art of barbeque.

Hearty Hog’s Veteran’s BBQ Camp is a non-profit run by veterans with the mission of helping to minimize some of the mental and emotional effects that come from military service.

Beginning in 2020, the organization teaches veterans “the art of low and slow cooking,” aiding in their reintegration into civilian life while also allowing them a chance to bond alongside fellow vets.

Interested veterans are given the chance to learn the skill of cooking barbeque, including how to select the right cut of meat, how to prepare the food (including sides), and how to serve their dishes to family and friends.

As reported by NewsChannel9, alumni of the program are left with a newfound culinary skill as well as the camaraderie of newfound friends. Many have gone on to share their newly obtained skill with others in need.

In 2021, a group of BBQ Camp alumni took their smokers to Waverly and fed nearly 450 flood victims, first responders, and volunteers at no cost after the area was devastated by flooding.

The next event is scheduled to be held in October at Hidden Hollow Resort, just outside of Chattanooga.

Upcoming events:

OCTOBER 12th-15th 2023 at Hidden Hollow Resort: Veteran BBQ Camp (Registered Veterans Only)

OCTOBER 14th 2023 at Hidden Hollow Resort: BBQ Sampling (Open To The Public)

See Facebook Page “Event” For Details.
