A Cheatham County teacher has been fired after being arrested for being high and possessing drugs at school.
According to school district administrators, 42-year-old Brandon Peters was terminated as soon as they were informed of the arrest. Peters, who had been employed since 2024, was teaching U.S. History and Personal Finance, as well as coaching wrestling at Sycamore High School.
According to the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office, staff members contacted them on February 14 after noticing signs of impairment. While completing a field sobriety test, Peters was “unsteady during the instruction phase,” according to the police report.
Peters claimed to have taken an anti-depressant that belonged to a family member but was found to be under the influence of THC. He was arrested and was charged with possession of a Schedule VI drug and public intoxication.
Peters was found to have eight vape pens containing THC, as well as a small amount of marijuana.
Peters is the second teacher to be arrested for drugs at a Cheatham County school this year.
In January, 24-year-old Mia King was arrested at a Cheatham County middle school after school resource officers found 3 baggies in her purse, two of which were found to contain cocaine.
The Cheatham County School District released the following statement:
“The safety and well-being of our students is one of our top priorities, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students. We are fully cooperating with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot share additional information at this time. The Sheriff’s Office can be contacted with any further questions.”
They noted that staff has recently undergone training in recognizing the signs of drug use. They also stated that all employees are subject to drug screening at any time and the district does have a drug dog that is used to help combat drugs being brought on campuses.
